More Details

Ok! I finally have a minute, I better use it while I can...

I have gotten a few questions via the blog and Facebook and I will try to start answering them here.

Q:  How are you feeling?  How was the first trimester?

I feel awesome.  Seriously, for the longest time I doubted that I was really pregnant because I did not have morning sickness.  I still got up and ran every other morning and did pilates the other days.  I was too hungry in the mornings to feel sick!  I fell asleep at night quicker - so that is fun.  Cutting back on caffeine was hard, but I think a cat nap when I get home from work has helped.  I also can go home at lunch and get a good 40 min nap in, if needed.  I do get twinges of nausea at night though, and usually while making dinner.  I have only gained four pounds in spite of a swelling tummy, so I guess I am okay!

Q:  How did you find out?

Matt and I were talking about going on a camping trip, just the two of us, for Memorial Day weekend.  A couple days before I told him I did not want to go if I was on my period though - we would be too remote and not have access to running water!  When I was a day late, I took a test - one of those ones that has the pink lines.  The second line was so faint...I was not sure.  I had Matt go out and buy me a digital test - one that read "pregnant" or "not pregnant" clearly.  We took it on the Friday morning before Memorial Day weekend, and it was a clear "Pregnant".  We were shocked, excited, and terrified - all at once!  Then we went out and saw "What to Expect When You are Expecting" and laughed our heads off.  Finally, we packed for that camping trip and left in the morning :)

Q:  How did you tell your work?

I started my job the week after I got pregnant, and did not know it.  So, I told a few ladies to start with, then everyone else once I hit the 12 week mark.  They are all understanding and sweet about it.  Work can be stressful sometimes, so now I just try to take deep breaths when things get hectic.

Q:  Are you using a doctor or a midwife?

I went to my lady doc for the blood test, initial evaluation, and exam.  It was really frustrating to me to wait in a waiting room for so long to only get 5 minutes to talk.  I called my insurance company and they could cover a midwife if I did not mind traveling to another city, as Kitsap county does not have any that I could find.  So we drive 45 minutes to our monthly appointments with her in Gig Harbor, but I get a solid HOUR of her time!  Also, she meets with us after work - so I don't miss any crucial work time.  We love her.  I am planning to give birth at a free standing birth center in Tacoma that specializes in natural childbirths.  It is close enough that my mom can drive there in 10 minutes :)

Q:  Are you experiencing any cravings?  Food aversions?
Salty anything!  I think that may have to do with the exercise (sweating).  I have rarely missed a day of working out.  It is so good for us, and I crave that.  Even when I don't feel like it - it gives me energy that I need.

I crave dairy and cheese anything.  Vinegar chips (baked!).  Those darn Pirate's Booty things that should be outlawed.

I also have now an aversion to most salads.  It is a texture thing, really.  I do a lot of steamed/stir fried veggies now.  Also, no more boiled eggs.  Can't stand the texture.

Also, I can't get enough grape juice.  Weird, huh? I water it down pretty good, but I always want some!

Q:  Are you going to find out the gender?

YES.  I cannot wait.  5 more weeks until we know what we are going to have!  We have names all picked out...

Q:  How is Matt doing?

Matt is 3 weeks away from graduation from his Master's Program and is 100% focused on finishing his thesis - he even took the month off of work so he can finish strong.  I am so proud of him!  He is eager to jump back into work in September, and being commission-based, he has some big financial goals he is trying to meet before February arrives.  He says goodnight to the baby every night and is always rubbing my bump.  It is darling - he is going to be a great daddy!  I also really appreciate that he gets up and runs with me in the mornings and goes on walks at night with me - even when he is dead tired.

So that is a little for now...much more to come :)

Happy almost Friday, all!

That's fantastic! I craved grape juice constantly with my first one (a boy) and also salty things. There were also a few months with that pregnancy where I couldn't eat enough clam chowder and oyster stew.

Happy for you and Matt (and your mom).

Glad that first trimester has gone so well! The second one is usually the easiest, mostly because you can still bend over to tie your shoes :) Also, I see no bump girl!

All the vanpoolers asked me to tell you CONGRATULATIONS! I remember how happy I was to get past that first trimester exhaustion. I think the only drag about trimester two is you don't go to the OB as often yet, and hearing that heartbeat is so addictive you just want to buy a portable ultrsound and listen to it every darn day. :) I'm thrilled for you guys.

We had such a good time with you. I hope we can make this an annual tradition! And just think, your little one has already hiked in Glacier Park!
